The Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S is the first of its type for Nikon’s Z series full-frame mirrorless cameras. As an f/2.8 S-type intended for pros and serious amateurs, it features a better build and a high-grade optical system that’s not so dependent on built-in profile corrections as the f/4 S-type models. The Tokina 24-70mm f/2.8 is very good between 24-35mm at f/2.8, but edge resolution drops the further you zoom in. The same is true of the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8, which although uniformly sharp at 24mm f/2.8, isn’t as good between 35mm and 70mm. Diffraction starts to play a part at the narrower f/16 and f/22 apertures, reducing overall DxOMark only test one copy of a lens. LensRentals has tested a statistically robust sample of 10 copies of each of the leading 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses, but only at full aperture. LensRentals found the Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 ED VR gave the best performance in the outer areas of the frame. In fact, just as these lines were written, Nikon I’ve had two Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lenses and one Nikon 24-120 f4 lens. The new 24-120mm, however, has a very good center definition at any focal length between full aperture (f/4) and f/11, except between 85mm and 120mm, where you have to shoot at close to f/5.6 to remain perfect. Overall, the new zoom is much more comfortable for daily use. Nikon's Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 S is a fast standard zoom lens for the company's Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
